A week of special events for visitors and locals alike

The Wild Atlantic Festival takes place 4th-11th August – a week filled with activities, tours, walks and events to celebrate our unique part of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Saturday 4th August 2018

 

La Duquesa Santa Ana Re-enactment Walk

8.30am – 9.00am : Community Centre

Commemorating the 430th Anniversary of the Spanish Armada: 1588-2018.

Come along and join this historical re-enactment walkin the footsteps of the 900 survivors of the Duquesa Santa Ana from Kiltoorish (Rosbeg) to Killybegs. Family friendly event. Walk duration and length approximately 30 Km (8 hours or walk what you can).

Registration will take place at the Ardara Community Centre 8.30 to 9.00am, Saturday 4th August. Bus arrangements at registration.

Adults: €20.00
Children under 16 free

Alpacas at Ardara Family Fun Day

11am to 2pm : The Rectory

Two alpacas will feature at a special animal farm during a Family Fun Day at the Rectory, Ardara, on Saturday, August 4th.

The alpacas, owned locally, will be  one of the key attractions at the new event which will also include a special electric model train display inside the rectory. The Family Fun Day, which takes place from 11am to 2pm, also has a family pet showat 11.30am, a children’s fancy dress competition at 12 noon, and sports and games for the very young. There will also be face and nail painting, teas, a home baking stand, other stalls and a barbecue.

Fun for all the Family at Narin Beach

1pm : Narin

The Dolmen Centre are hosting a Family Beach Day on Narin Strand starting at 1pm.

Lots of family activities including Egg & Spoon and 3-legged races, Tug of War, Stalls, BBQs, Music and much more! For the artistic among you, there will be a Sandcastle/Sand Art competition on the beach itself.

Entry for this event is €10, with prizes to be had for various categories.

Join us for what promises to be ‘A good day out’! All funds go towards the running of the Dolmen Centre.

Volunteers needed to help organise on the day. Please call or drop into the Dolmen Centre to register.

Bart Whelan Photographic Exhibition

All Day : The Heritage Centre

Bart Whelan, local historian, radio presenter on Owenea FM, and photographer, curates this popular exhibition of his photographs in the Heritage Centre. The exhibition provides a snapshot of the local people and places from years gone by.

Feast of Music at the Beehive

Sunday Night : The Beehive Bar

A great night of music in the Beehive with The Burner, The Bun and O’Hanlon which includes Dermot Byrne, Brendan Quinn and Pete O’Hanlon.

They will play a mix of Cajun, Country, Tex Mex, Trad, Blues and more.

This is sure to be a great session so come along and enjoy!

Town Trail Walk

2.00pm : Starting at the Catholic Church grounds.

A 6km walk along the Town Trail. Duration approximately 1 hour.

Dancing at the Crossroads

As part of the Wild Atlantic Festival, Dancing at The Crossroads will take place on the street on Monday night 6th August starting at 8pm. Join Clement Gallagher and the Ardara Ceili Dancers with the Duntally Ceili Band providing the music.

A great night’s fun and dancing and everyone is welcome to join in as they go back in time with a Ceili on the Street!

Big Country Dance

10.30pm : Corner House

Big Country Dance with the amazing band Hard 2 Beat. A great event and admission is free!

 

 

Tuesday 7th August

 

Weaving & Craft Display

2.00pm : St. Shanaghan House

Everyone is warmly welcomed by Tadgh and his staff for a special afternoon at St. Shanaghan House. There will also be a talk on Horticulture as well as demonstrations of various dances for relaxation, and much more.

The film follows the Parrs, a family of superheroes who are forced to live a quiet suburban life while hiding their powers. Mr. Incredible’s desire to help people draws the entire family into a confrontation with a vengeful fan-turned-foe and his killer robot.

A trip back in time with a wonderful craft and weaving display at Molloy’s Factory on the Killybegs road. An event not to be missed!

Bart Whelan Lecture

The inimitable Bart Whelan gives a lecture on his photographic display.

 

Adults’ Film Show

8.00pm : Heritage Centre

The Siege of Jadotville. Running Time 1hr 48 mins. Admission €3.

An Irish commander and his battalion of 150 men withstand a siege by 3,000 Congolese troops led by French and Belgian mercenaries working for mining corporations.

The outnumbered Irish company was eventually forced to surrender after ammunition and supplies were exhausted, but not before inflicting heavy casualties on the Katangese and their mercenaries. They were held as prisoners of war for approximately one month, with no loss of life.

Plus, a special showing of a 14 min locally produced film about Dylan Thomas’s time in Ireland. ‘Young Dylan’

Basket Making & Spinning

Eugene Byrne, famous basket-weaver from Teelin, will be making and teaching basket weaving in the Heritage Centre on Friday 10th August, 11am-4pm. Free drop spindle classes will also take place.

The ducks have been training since the quack of dawn, so they’ll be in beak performance for the race.
