Note of Armada

The Spanish Armada Walk in commemoration of the survivors of La Duquesa Santa Ana off Loughros Peninsula on the 29th September 1588. We will be following in the footsteps of the crew as they made their way to Killybegs in the hope of boarding one of the three Spanish ships who had taken shelter there. When they got to Killybegs, they found that only one ship (La Girona) remained there, the other two had sunk in the harbour. La Girona set a course for Scotland in the hope that, with the help of the Scottish, the crew of 1,300 would make it back to Spain. Two days after leaving Killybegs, La Girona was wrecked off Lacada Point, Co. Antrim. Only between 5 and 9 people survived. The shipwrecking of some 26 Spanish ships off the Irish coast in the autumn was one of the worst tragedies in the history of seafaring with about 6,000 foreigners losing their lives.
